Welcome To Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park (QENP) is one of Uganda’s most famous and biodiverse conservation areas. Located in western Uganda, it spans approximately 1,978 square kilometers (764 square miles) and is bordered by Lake Edward, Lake George, and the Rwenzori Mountains. Established in 1952, the park was originally named Kazinga National Park but was renamed in 1954 in honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Uganda.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is part of the Western Rift Valley and is known for its diverse ecosystems, which include savannah, wetlands, forests, and crater lakes. It is home to over 95 mammal species and more than 600 bird species, making it a top destination for wildlife enthusiasts, bird watchers, and adventure travelers.

Highlights of Queen Elizabeth National Park

1. Tree-Climbing Lions – The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha Sector, a rare behavior seen in only a few places worldwide.
2. Kazinga Channel Boat Safari – A cruise along the Kazinga Channel offers close-up views of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, and diverse bird species.
3. Big Game Safaris – The park is home to elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, and antelopes, providing excellent game drive opportunities.
4. Chimpanzee Tracking in Kyambura Gorge – Visitors can trek through the tropical forest of Kyambura Gorge to see habituated chimpanzees in the wild.
5. Diverse Birdlife – With over 600 bird species, Queen Elizabeth National Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, featuring flamingos, kingfishers, fish eagles, and shoebill storks.
